Gruop Reflection from AS Media Coursework

AS Media Coursework: Group Reflection

Research:
What we did well: We were organised and communicative.
What we will do better in A2: Share the workload more evenly.

Planning:
What we did well: Storyboarded most of the film, we preempted of most of the problems we were likely to encounter.
What we will do better in A2: Storyboard the whole film rather than just the start, and again, share the workload more evenly.

Filming:
What we did well: We got an actor in, we filmed everything on one day before Christmas which meant we were ahead of our schedule allowing more time for editing.
What we will do better in A2: Get a surplus of 'reaction shots'.

Editing:
What we did well: Communicated with each other well (through an online chat), we delegated responsibilities and were organised. We kept to a good time scheduel so we knew what to focus on and when.
What we will do better in A2: Include more 'technical' aspects, any titles will be well-thought out.

Sound:
What we did well: We recorded lots of foley and the music worked well.
What we will do better in A2: Be more organised with foley.

Evaluation:
What we did well: We were organised and used a wide variety of media types such as soundcloud, photographs and constructed videos e.g. behind the scenes.
What we will do better in A2: Time management and efficiency (don't leave things to the last week).

Illustration, Amplification and Disjunction

Music Video Types

Illustration:
Illustration music videos are where lyrics are taken literally and they are portrayed in the image. They could include a live version of the song or the band/artist could be acting out various scenes that fit directly with the lyrics.
An example of this would be Wait and Bleed - Slipknot

Here we see Slipknot using a live version of their performance 'Wait and Bleed' as their official music video. By doing this we are able to see what type of genre it is (this is also evident when the frequency of cuts increase randomly through out the song).  By using a live performance we have more narrative view and natural emotions towards the song.

Amplification:
Amplification is perhaps the most common kind of music video we see. They usually have a more stylised lay out and exaggerate the lyrical message in order to portray it somewhat clearer.
An example of this would be My Chemical Romance - Teenagers

In this video we have a band that are more often than not in their music video singing along with the words. They are set in a high school automatically relating to the title 'Teenagers'. The song is based on how teenagers are perceived in a negative way and this song emphasises these thoughts almost making them look ridiculous mocking what people think. On the first part of the chorus "Teenagers scare the..." we have a load of teenagers break through a bolted door (0:39sec) making them seem violent and aggressive, we then have a long shot to show all of them charge in and it's almost zombie-like, this emphasises the fear people have of these teenagers. By doing this instead of trying to portray teenagers positively they are following the actual meaning in the lyrics.

Disjunction:
Disjunction music videos have nothing to do with the lyrical content. Sometimes they don't follow the genre of music either. They are usually abstract and can confuse the viewer or distract them making them interpret their own meanings for the song.
An example of this would be August Burns Red - Identity

In this video we can see the band (August Burns Red) but we also have them in animated surrounding underwater whereas none of their song lyrics mention anything about ocean life, the sea or water. The song lyrics represent a struggle within someone and the title suggest that it's about identity. The lyrics "stop living in denial" mixed the the title suggest anger which is portrayed through the violence through out the video but it's portrayed irrelevantly according to the video and lyrics. This shows how it is a great example of a disjunction video completely separating the lyrics from video using abstract imagery.
